It’s called C-Diffaceal Colitis

Tagged As: C Diff Colitis

Question:
I am 21 year old male and have had Crohns for five years now. Back in November I started taking a drug called Erythromycin. A month later I was very sick. I thought it was the Crohns flaring up so I decided to try and treat myself by taking more prednisone. That didn't work. Every time I ate I had extreme pain and bleeding.  I finally went to see my GI doctor and he had some blood drawn. My white count was through the roof and my red count was dangerously low. So he admitted me into the hospital January 1. They found out that I had a major infection in my colon caused from the Erythromycin. Its called C-Diffaceal Colitis or something. Now I have Colitis and Crohns. I was in the hospital for over three weeks. I was taking 60 mg of prednisone a day now I am down to 40 mg a day and 12 pentasa. My doctor recently had me try the new Remicade infusion. But I am still not feeling that good and I still need pain killers sometimes. This has been a long battle. I want to do anything possible to avoid surgery. I also would like to stop taking prednisone. I was wondering if anyone has had C-Diff and has had the Remicade infusion and what their experience with the whole ordeal has been like.

Answer:
I had c-diff after a resection.  they had me taking a lot of antibiotics and that is what caused it.  what happens is the antibiotics kill all the good bacteria in your gut leaving the bad bacteria to run rampant.  this was 4 years ago, so I can't remember the drug they gave me, but I was on it for two weeks and then was fine... I want to say vancomycin, but I don't think that was it... can anyone help me out here?  What is the common drug given to treat clostridium difficile toxin?   As for the remicade infusion... I’ve never had that so I can't help you there.
