Does my dog have colitis?

Tagged As: Colitis Dog

Question:
Does my dog have colitis?

Answer:
Your dog does have colitis by definition.  The blood and mucus is signs that the large intestine (colon) is inflamed for some reason.  The tricky bit is WHY.  There are a large number of causes of colitis and many must be controlled rather than cured.  You and your vet may decide to trial a treatment of 2 but ideally testing should be done such as laboratory fecal exam for resistant worms, giardia etc, and an endoscopic exam +- biopsies. Many vets (in New Zealand anyway!) will refer for endoscopy as the equipment is very expensive. Typical control measures for the non-treatable colitis disease include corticosteroids and novel-protein (a meat source not eaten before), high quality, low residue diet.
