Question:
Can anyone recommend any bland diet recipes? As usual, my colitis dietary restrictions are unlike many others I have read about (Join the club, right). Any way, on top of many of the colitis restriction, I also must stay away from all spicy foods due to allergies and chronic heartburn, which even the Prevacid doesn't mask completely.
Answer:
It is difficult to give recipes for colitis because each person is a little bit different in what they can tolerate. From your post, it sounds like you are on a very strict diet, but you didn't give any details. I will certainly share with you the foods that I can tolerate. Try them and see if they work for you. I am not lactose-intolerant. If you are lactose intolerant, these may not work for you. When I am having a flareup, there are a few items I make sure to have in my pantry & fridge at all times. These can be quickly combined to make a lot of different recipes. I believe that you CAN eat well when you are on a bland diet. The trick is to have things ready with a minimal amount of preparation time. When you're already sick, you don't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Having things ready to eat, or easily prepared, helps you keep up your weight because you are less likely to skip meals. Some of the items are: Mashed potato flakes Canned chicken broth Campbell's Cream of Potato Soup Campbell's Cream of Chicken Soup Rice (Minute Rice is OK, but it's really not that hard to make regular rice.) Egg noodles Saltine Crackers / Ritz Crackers Eggs Chicken and Turkey lunchmeat slices (get the baked kind, from the deli) Popsicles Sherbet
