my doctor wants to try remicade for my colitis

Tagged As: Colitis Remicade Ulcerative

Question:
my doctor wants to try remicade for my uc, asacol not working, prednisone affecting bones, can' t really use it anymore, azulfadine caused pancreatitis, 6mp, on a year a half, haven't achieved remission.  So here I am let’s try remicade, I know it isn't approved for uc, only crohn’s. What should I do?

Answer:
I have taken remicade for uc and had decent results.  I got a treatment in January and it helped me get off of prednisone, which I was on for over a year previously (same as you, started to affect bones, along with all the other evils).  When I went for my second remicade treatment in March I had a bad allergic reaction while receiving the infusion, even though they had premeditated me.  Apparently that is fairly common.   In any event, I had another flare up in early June and had to go back on prednisone.  I didn't respond even at 60mg pred, so my doc and I decided to try the remicade again.  Had an infusion at the beginning of July and started feeling much better.  I'm now tapering off pred again; I cut down to 40mg tomorrow, and have another infusion scheduled for the end of August.  It seems to work for me.  I know after this latest infusion I felt better the next day, but I think a lot of that could have been mental because I was so worried after my prior bad experience and because trying the remicade again was about all that was left before the doc recommended surgery, which I don't want. The original recommendation for remicade for my UC came from a specialist I saw at Johns Hopkins who was aware of some favorable preliminary research.
