Question:
I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis in 1998 after years of problems. Have been on asacol since then, but is not helping at all now. Anyone else has micro colitis - what meds are you on?
Answer:
I have a microscopic Colitis called Collagenous Colitis...which also was diagnosed in 1998 though I have suffered with it since I was 16 ...just misdiagnosed all these years...I did 15 months of rednisone, which did not help, Asacol was tried on me, but I became Anorexic on it ... The only meds I am on now is Colestid which binds you up some so you won't have the constant BIG D Some people (though not I) have had great progress using the Pepto Bismal...I think its 12 tablets per day for 12 weeks, but right now, I am not positive. I have Microscopic Colitis also. I was originally dx'd with IBD in January of this year but have had flares for many many years with lots of wrong dx's including one doc who told me it was just my imagination. The first GI I saw this year said I had nonspecific IBD that was in the UC family. He had me first on Asacol and then Pentassa, along with Colestid and Prednisone, without very good results. I lost my job in May and had to change GIs in June to suit my husband's insurance company. He took me off Pentassa, decreased the Colestid, and began a regime of 6 Pepto caplets daily. I'm now noticing a rastic difference. I'm at 2.5 mg. of Pred which will be decreased, if not stopped, on August 15th. I haven't needed Colestid in over 2 weeks but this may be because I'm on Percocet for pain due to a herniated disk in my lower back. It seems that this pain med is actually constipating me. I'm only have 2-3 bms per week! Man, I used to go that many times within the first hour I was up in the morning. I'm actually having to eat foods that contain fiber so that I can move my bowels. Anyhow, I haven't had any IBD symptoms in for the past 3 weeks. PTL!!!!!! My GI stated that a lot of his patients have maintained long periods without any IBD symptoms once a 3 month period of the Pepto routine has been completed. I'm praying this will be true for me, but I won't actually be able to tell until I'm off the pain meds. I have several more steroid epidural shots to go through and hopefully won't have to have back surgery. I am so glad that the pepto is working for you...The colestid has helped me, and I only need to take it every once in awhile now ... still having some minor cramping, but that's okay, I can deal with it ...its better then running to the bathroom 40 times per day, and praying that I make it!! I also had more problems first thing in the morning and also in the evening as I sat down to watch night time tv...I think its because I hardly eat during the day.
