Question:
I have a question. My son, 22, had ulcerated colitis and had the entire lg colon removed and the dr said that the ulcerated colitis was cured. Today after have stomach pains for some weeks now went to the emergency room and after number of test was told the ulcerated colitis is back. Now what? They can’t remove the small bowel too can they? Just need some guidance before he goes to the doc.
Answer:
I am not sure but I guess they could. Are they sure it's UC? It sounds kind of strange from what I have learned. I have CD though so others can probably help better than me. Sounds like it could possibly be Crohn’s, if the entire colon was removed, I don't think it could be colitis? Well if they removed his entire colon and rectum then he is effectively cured of ulcerative colitis. I assume he has a colostomy or does he have a pouch or an ileo-anal anastomosis? If he's still in trouble it's highly possible that he may have Crohn's. As far as removing the small bowel, the small bowel is more important to the body than the colon so any time you remove small intestine you are likely to lose some absorption of vital nutrients depending on what section and how much is removed. You can't live without at least a certain amount of small intestine. Right, if the entire colon + rectum were removed it is technically impossible to have colitis. The medical definition of colitis is inflammation of the colon. The doctor was correct when he said your son was cured of Ulcerative Colitis. No colon = no ulcerative colitis. When he went to the ER and they said the ulcerative colitis was back, they were wrong calling it colitis. It would have to be Crohn's Disease. I have heard doctors call all IBD's colitis. So it's very possible your son had Crohn's Disease only in the colon and not Ulcerative Colitis. I would go back to the doctor who diagnosed it as UC and see what he has to say. I am really sorry to hear he has anything wrong - no matter what it is.
