Ulcerative Colitis and Pregnancy?

Tagged As: Ulcerative Colitis Pregnancy

Question:
I have few questions concerning Ulcerative Colitis and pregnancy: - Is it possible to get pregnant with UC? - Can medicines like 5-Asa and Prednisone be taken during pregnancy(can they be harmful)? If someone has knowledge about pregnancy and UC, all information is welcome!

Answer:
I had UC for 24 years before having the j-pouch surgery in August. I had three pregnancies during that time and took azulfadine (5-asa) during all three pregnancies. During the first pregnancy (the only pregnancy during which I had a flare-up) I also took high doses of prednisone.  There were no problems with any of my babies. The only recommendation I have is try to get pregnant when you're in remission. Usually there is no change in your condition that way. If you become pregnant during a flare, it tends to make things worse. At least that's the way I understand it. I have UC, my doctor advised against getting pregnant. Well, after a year of trying (I was in remission) we had a healthy baby girl. I was on asulfazaline and folic acid. No problems. I actually felt better when I was pregnant. My daughter is now 5 yrs old and doing great. I wish that I had this group before I became pregnant because at the time, I too had many many questions. Hope that some of yours have been answered. I was told that Asacol cannot cross the placenta but that Prednisone can cause teratogenic effects during pregnancy. I wouldn't take Prednisone during pregnancy.

I just had a health baby boy 5 days ago. I got pregnant during a UC flare up and it only got worse and worse. The doctor put me on asacol and 30 mg of predinsone to control the flare up. I tapered down to 10 but then had another flare up a few weeks before he was born and increased again to 20 mg a day. Worse the presdinsone increased my blood sugar and I had to take insulin 3x a day. And get a stress test 2x a week and see a nutritional consult for diabeties 1x a week. Not to mention my GI DR. and OB DR. The diarrea also made my amniotic fluid low which worried the doctor. And the bleeding made me aniemic which left me feeling like I had the flu. My diet consisited of white bread and meat and some dairy for most of my pregnancy. Not very health for a growing baby. I really worried about him. Everything turned out fine, thanks to wonderful doctors but , I will not have another baby it was really that horrible.
