Ulcerative Colitis Flare up after an ileostomy?

Tagged As: Ulcerative Colitis

Question:
I had an Ileostomy formed in 1993 after suffering with UC (but didn't know that's what it was) for about ten years and I had a Urostomy performed in December 2001, I have over the past few months had a continual dull ache in the abdomen and had bouts of very very watery output. I went to see the doctor today who thought I might be getting a flare up of the UC, is it possible as I have had all the colon and some of the ileum removed? Has anyone else ever had a UC flare up after an ileostomy?

Answer:
I have always been told that once ulcerative colitis is removed by surgery it is gone for good. One possibility is that your ulcerative colitis was misdiagnosed and that what you really had was Crohn's Disease. With Crohn's there is the potential for flare-ups in other areas of the digestive tract -- from mouth to anus -- after surgery. Diagnostically, it is often difficult to distinguish between Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's. I am wondering if you had your rectum removed when you had your Ileostomy? If not, your rectum could have become inflamed causing your dull ache. Yes I had my rectum removed two years after the ileostomy, also when they did the ileostomy they also took some of my ileum away as well. Then they had to use a bit of my ileum to do the urostomy.
