Question:
I have crohn’s and want to have another baby. I am afraid of getting pregnant because of the medication I am on. What can I do?
Answer:
I had a baby with Chrons Disease. I was taking 5 mg of Prednisone (went to 10 once). The doctor told me to discontinue the Asacol because it was still fairly new and they didn’t know if it would have an adverse reaction on the pregnancy or not. I had no problems at all and am now the proud mother of a four year old girl. The OB/GYN did tell me that it might be difficult to become pregnant because of the Prednisone and because I am underweight but that the Chrons should not affect the pregnancy. The OB/GYN also told me that he had a patient who had Chrons worse than me that had a normal pregnancy. He also mentioned that the hormonal mix-up that occurs during pregnancy could possibly help the Chrons and I believe that he was correct. Just talk to your OB/GYN and see what the doctor says! I also have Crohn's. I am now pregnant with my second. I did have a very hard time getting pregnant. I am on 6mp, pentasa, and 7.5mg of prednisone plus the oscal, Centrum, folic acid and chromogen (iron pill). I had my colon out 10 years, but still have a pretty bad case in my small bowel. I find as my belly grows I get pain. With my first, I had a partial obstruction in my third trimester. I also was put on bed rest with both pregnancies due to preterm contractions. We do not know if it is Crohn's related or would have happened anyway
