Question:
What are the statistics for children of Crohns sufferers also having Crohns? And are their any important statistical indicators, such as rates for parents who did not have active Crohns before the birth of the child?
Answer:
This is a quote from Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis: Everything you Need to Know, by Fred Saibil, MD; 1996..... Chapter 2; Who Gets IBD? What Causes It? If a person has IBD, the risk of that person's child developing IBD is thought to be about 5 percent. However, if both parents have IBD, the risk of IBD occurring in the children SEEMS to be at least 50 percent. He doesn't differentiate between CD & UC in these estimates. We know that Crohn's disease tends to run in families. Studies have shown that about 20 to 25 percent of patients may have a close relative with either Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. There does not seem to be any clear-cut pattern to this familial clustering. Research actively continues in an attempt to establish a link to specific genes governing its transmission. At this time, there is no way to predict which, if any, family members will develop Crohn's disease
