Question:
My systolic blood pressure has increased from the 130s to the 140s, with some readings as high as 151. My diastolic is never above 84 and often in the high 70s. I've been feeling dizzy with discomfort and the mild sense of a tight band on the top of my head and in the back. Are these symptoms of high blood pressure? I'm a 59 yr old woman, overweight by about 30 lbs. Due to fibromyalgia and knee surgery 1 1/2 yrs ago, my activity has decreased and I'm finding it harder than ever to lose weight. I'm trying to figure out whether these symptoms are related to my blood pressure.
Answer:
Your blood pressure is not that high--certainly not high enough to cause symtpoms. Your diastolic is great! If your pressure is elevated, it is more likely that the pain and discomfort you are experiencing is causing it. At your age, you are doing pretty well--it is common for the systolic to go up as we get older. Just keep an eye on it. Your symptoms fit more in line with the dysautonomia that most fibro patients experience.
