Question:
Does anyone have any information on what my eye doctor is calling an optical migraine? I had an episode this morning while driving to work - vision in my left eye went totally blurry. The only way I made it off the freeway was by closing my left eye until I could get to the next exit. I sat about 10 minutes & finally my vision cleared up. Really scared me so I got in to see the him - he did a very thorough eye exam & could find nothing wrong with my eyes. He spent a long time with me & went through some medical manuals.

Answer:
An optical migraine is an aura without the full migraine experience following. It is also called a No-pain migraine as the usual headache pain of migraine is missing. Unless you also have other migraines, treatment other than resting until the vision clears usually isn't given. I have both migraines without aura as well as optical migraines. Since taking daily beta blockers for migraine prevention my optical migraines have disappeared. I would be very happy if my painful migraines disappeared as well.
