Question:
I am a middle-aged woman who has always been very active, strong, and healthy. I always thought of myself as pretty much indestructible. But it is almost the first anniversary of my fiance's death (from liver disease), and in addition to the emotional trauma I have had more physical health problems this year than in the previous ten years. I've had eye problems, dental problems, a skin rash, and joint problems. I can understand the last one, because I had increased the amount of exercise I was doing, in an attempt to keep the grief at bay, and I overdid it. But just last week, the doctor found my blood pressure was 180/105, and saw that it had been steadily increasing all year. So now I'm on blood pressure medication too. I haven't seen anyone else complaining about this. Does this happen to other grieving people, and does it go away eventually? I know that stress causes physical symptoms, but I am alarmed by this high blood pressure.
Answer:
I believe that stress can really throw one's body out of sorts. However, you might consider seeing your doctor anyway in case there is something else going on. With some luck, the doc may give you some peace of mind if stress is the cause. In any event, it can't hurt to have the doc take a look.
