Question:
My 50 year old male American friend living in Germany wonders if lidocaine is offered to patients who suffer from cluster headaches. He would like to try this treatment since he has suffered for years from this terrible form of headaches. I told him that here in the US Dean Edell, M. D., who has a nationally syndicated call-in/fax-in type radio program, has talked a number of times a few years ago about the effective treatment of cluster headaches with a tiny amount of lidocaine emplaced way up in the nose while one inverts himself or hangs his head upside-down (in order to get the lidocaine to a certain, very specific spot way up in the nose). Does anyone know if in Germany he might find someone who knows about this treatment and might offer it to him?
Answer:
There was one small study on the use of lidocaine intranasaly for cluster headache and a couple for migraines...very important work to be sure....as Lidocaine is extremely inexpensive when compared to other headache medications.
