bruxism/headache therapy?

Tagged As: Headache Therapy

Question:
My brothers wife has extreme headaches. My brother found on the net a person (I'm pretty sure he is a DDS) that does a different type of approach. He makes a lower appliance for night time that goes just on the anterior teeth, with the thought that you do not clench as hard with the anteriors as you do with the posterior (I think that is what he said), then also, he makes a hard plastic upper appliance that is worn during the day. This DDS guarentees that you will feel better or have improvements in your headaches within 30 days or you do not pay his fee of 1600.00. I asked my doc that I work for and he doesn't understand it. Anyone else out there understand the thinking of this or have used it? Thanks for any input.

Answer:
The FDA has approved the migraine-trial protocol, which is now in progress. (Since migraine is a medical diagnosis, specific data is required for the FDA to allow the claim: prevents migraine). So far, in about 900 patients with medically-diagnosed migraine, 65% have elimination (or significant reduction) of migraine events. The FDA's approval for migraine prevention is a practical certainty. The only question is how strong a wording the FDA will use. This will happen sometime next spring...and when it does, the climate is *really* going to change!
