Question:
One week ago I became ill with the flu, it had all the typical symptoms which accompany this illness in my case: Sore throat, ear pain, joints pain, fever and so on but also it had something very new to me, something I never had before: Sharp, strong, stabbing headache which occures sometimes randomly or when I move my head / touch a affected half of my head or use my facial muscles to move the skin on it. Its source seems to move all around the half of the head, sometimes it is on top, next day in the back, next day in the forehead, sometimes randomly around my ear. Also a rather weaker source is located above the right eyebrow. Again, only the right half of the head is affected. The pain comes, stabbes and goes away immediately, just to come back again on next quick moverment or touch of the head. The fever is gone, flu symptoms are weaker, bit the strong headache is still here, as vivid as ever. I am begining to wonder what that is ... by the description it mostly matches with Cluster Headache. My age group and sex (Male, 26) seem to put me in the affected group as well. I also had lots of stress, low sleep nights and so on in the recent 5-6 month. Still the symptions are somehow different, Cluster Headache is said to appear for a short period of time and leave for some. Mine is always here when I do something to provoke it (Which is very easy). Did anyone of you expierenced anything similar ? I am kind of worried .....
Answer:
Given that you've had the flu, have you considered that you might have a problem with your sinuses? Every few years one of my sinuses becomes completely blocked as a result of a respiratory infection. Of course, I figure it's another migraine and treat it as such, only this fresh hell doesn't respond to Imitrex. It usually takes a very long course of antibiotics and lots of ibuprophen. I also find that flushing my nasal cavities and sinuses with a saline solution seems to speed up my recovery. All the best as you sort this out.
