Question:
A mother called me wanting info I don't have, and I wonder if any of you can help. She is most interested in 1) learning some way to alleviate her daughter's severe headaches, and 2) learning whatever people know about children taking Mepron and Zithro, which has been recommended to her by a VERY well recommended East Coast doc on the chance the girl was coinfected with Babesia. The girl is now 16, was infected by an observed tick at age 5, first diagnosed and treated at age 9 (by Dr. LaVoie) and did wel for a while, but then developed subtle symptoms -- some pain in her legs and joints, some headaches. She was treated with amoxicillin, doxy and HBO, and again did well until recently. Now she is having severe headaches (pain in the head with burning and stinging on top of her head), has become weak and depressedd and is losing her memory. She also has swollen hands. She has been out of the house only briefly since January because every time she goes out and is active she gets sicker. A supposedly lyme-knowledgeable local (california) doc told them there was no third stage LD and diagnosed Migraines. A pain clinic did a spinal tap, with findings suggestive of some autoimmune dysfunction; on the basis of that and a positive LUAT, they are willing to entertain LD as a possibility, but haven't a clue how to treat it. Like I said, a very reliable doc now recommends Zithro plus Mepron, although I'm not sure the girl has had a positive test for babesiosis. THis wonderfully resourceful mother has also found a local general practitioner who does believe in Lyme, will go to bat for the girl and is willing to consult with the East Coast doc, but he himself is not knowledgeable about LD or babesiosis.
Answer:
I have two teenagers who have doe the Mepron/Zithromax treatment, with amazing good results for the child with the worst symptoms. He is still on it, and has resumed attending school full-time, made the honor roll, after months of being very ill and home tutoring. I'd be glad to share what I know with this parent.
