Question:
I have been suffering menstrual migraine for over a year. Typically the pain starts about 3-4 days before menstruation and it becomes very difficult for me to function. As I work in a fairly physical job, I would appreciate any advice re treating these type of migraines. I usually take ibuprofen, but the amounts I need to take are starting to scare me - usually 8-10 tablets per day for 2-3 days. I dislike taking medication, so would like to know if anything else works.
Answer:
There are all kinds of meds/treatment that would be better than taking that much ibuprofen. Taking just that is only addressing the pain and not very well. I am not a medical professional, so I have no qualificiations to recommend an exact pharmacutical (sp?) treament but I will strongly suggest to please set up an appt with a doctor, whether it be a gyno or a gp or a neuro to discuss this. In the meantime, I will say the usual non-medical ideas are to stay away from caffeine, sugars, or anything you already know that can be a trigger. And get plenty of rest during that time. I used to suffer from those...twice a month actually. Not fun. I can understand your frustration and dreading knowing it's gonna hit so regularly. Don't know how old you are or where you are in the menstrual cycle of life, but it does get better as time goes on. It's your body reacting to the fluctuation in hormones and those come and go as we age. Hope you find some relief.
