Question:
I am a woman in my early forties who never had any major headache problems. Last month I was quite blind for half an hour and I was told that I had an occular migraine. But no major pain. I keep having at least a couple of days a week this hot feeling in my face with this terrible headache that is not relieved by Tylenol. It lasts for hours- 1 to 5. I think that it is triggered by exahustion and stress but I am not sure what it is.
Answer:
I've suffered from occular migraines with and without pain for years. For me, they are hormonally triggered - menstruation, first trimester of pregnancy, perimenopause. Considering your age, perimenopausal, hormone fluctuation is a likely cause of your headaches and face flushes. I'm in surgical menopause, but am still trying to find the right hormonal balance. The past five months have been a roller coaster of this kind of stuff - headaches - face flushing, etc. I have come to understand that during this time, our progesterone level may be low. You can buy over the counter progesterone cream and apply it 1/4 teaspoon 2x daily (ProGest) is a good brand. Progesterone will enhance the estrogen you are producing and progesterone also helps maintain good vascular tone, which should help with the flushes and migraines. It' can't hurt you - and it's worth a try. After using cream for about a month, I am noticing some positive results. However, this is not an instant cure. Takes about 3 months to get into your system and notice dramatic results. But, as I said, it's worth a try. If you would like any more info, please email me and I can try to help.
