Question:
I had headaches before and had TOS surgery. After the first rib on each side was removed, the headaches and cold, weak hands disappeared for a few years. After starting work again as a secretary, it came back but not as bad until I was in 2 car accidents about 5 min. apart. Since then I have a constant headache that gets worse after typing, lifting, etc. I am on a daily long-acting narcotic (same strength for last 3 yrs.), and I use many relaxation/non-medical treatments. They just finished doing nerve blocks which have helped my hand strength (I can open a bottle of pop now) but haven't helped my headaches. Anyone else ever hear of this? I have tried every medication for migraines and the pain clinic doesn't know what else to do. I don't have any side-effects from the Kadian (morphine - 24hr release), but the last two weeks my head is getting worse but I dont want to have to increase my breakthrough meds. Any ideas?
Answer:
You need to see a headpain specialist! The pain clinic, if it's anything like the one I've been going to this summer, can only handle the straightforward stuff. I've been a patient twice at the Michigan Head Pain & Neurological Institute in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the original and pretty much the gold standard for migraine and head pain diagnosis and treatment. I can wholeheartedly recommend them to you from my personal case, and from seeing how they worked with dozens of fellow patients who had everything from an auto-assembly-line bolt shot through the head, to clusterheads who banged their heads on the floor.
