Can caffeine be used in treating cluster headaches?

Tagged As: Excedrin Migraine Ingredient

Question:
Why is caffeine used as an active ingredient in some medications (cafergot, excedrin migraine, etc.) and at the same time seen as a possible trigger for a migraine. Can caffeine be used in treating cluster headaches?

Answer:
Caffeine, like all of our drugs is a good thing when we take it in moderation and for the right reasons. If someone is a habitual user of caffeine products, the little bit of caffeine in something like Excedrin, is a drop in the bucket. I don't use much caffeine, don't drink coffee, very few soft drinks. Caffeine works great when I need a booster for my migraine...I'll take a Zomig and two Excedrin. But I have to be very careful not to abuse it as it will cause a rebound action...similar to the caffeine withdrawals a person feels when they stop drinking coffee.
