Question:
I've been suffering w/migraines for 19 years now, mostly originating around the time of my menstrual cycle. My most recent trip to the doctor resulted in a nerve block (which I had before but seems to be working this time - so far - knock, knock) and his recommendation for me to take 1000mg/day of Magnesium. I had to get the Magnesium from the pharmacist (not rx though) and it came in the form of 400 mg Magnesium Oxide tablets, each of which has 241.3mg of elemental Magnesium. I started on it tonight & took 2 tablets. (I DO plan on contacting my doc's office to verify my dosage) What I'm wondering is, if you're taking Magnesium to prevent migraines, how much Magnesium are you taking & in what form are you taking it. I'd also like to know if it has significantly helped anyone else w/similar symptoms. I feel like a health expert when it comes to any kind of drug for migraine, but when it comes to supplements I'm lost! Thank you in advance for any replies/suggestions/advice!
Answer:
I get my magnesium in two forms during the day. I take a calcium/magnesium pill in the morning and at night. It's 500 mg calcium/250 mg magnesium. I also take a 500 mg magnesium capsule around midday (lunchtime or so). I get mine at GNC or the Whole Foods Market. If you're getting the migraines mostly around hormonal times...has your doctor tried an estrogen patch a few days before and after your cycle to keep your estrogen from making a large drop each month?
