Question:
I do not have migraine headaches but have had occular migraines off and on over a long period of time. All I know about them is what they are called. But I've been told they can be cause by hormones like when a woman goes through the change. I've been there, done that. After a year of not having any, the other day I had two within an hour. The next day I had one. Apparently these were caused by emotions. Happened to be seeing my GP during this time period and he agreed with me. I hang it on to the acupuncture theory of eyes=liver, anger, etc., etc., and I had been very angry. But what I would most like to know are: what is happening physiologically; how many people have these occular migraines without the headaches; what, if anything, is new about what causes them. I tried to look up the subject on the Internet and found almost nothing. Mine last almost exactly 20 minutes. Sometimes I can sense one coming some minutes before I actually see it.
Answer:
Does stress and hypertension make more sense to you than emotions? I had had a very stressful couple of weeks and was angry. These are not headaches but are brief visual disturbances. My BP had also been obviously high during this period. The last time I had occular migraines was slightly over a year ago. Just before leaving on vacation my acupuncturist had needled Heart 1. About 24 hours later I was ready to tear the house apart. He never told me that point was for releasing emotions. I was terribly stressed during vacation period. My BP was obviously up also. Some months later my BP hit the danger level and while getting onto a medication formula I could tolerate and would work, I again had the visual disturbances. While I have never received needles for migraines (remember, I do not have the headaches), I know of those who have. In Eastern thinking there are several causes. My vet, who does acupuncture on animals, did acupressure on his wife for migraines and she rarely has them any more. He explained to me the several causes which I don't know recall after so many years. With his wife it involved the wood element, liver and gall bladder (back to anger). She's fine now. My GP also treated himself with acupressure for the migraines and he's fine. I am just so grateful these are so rare for me and do not involve the horrible headaches. But what happens in the eyes? Guess I'll just have to make a note to ask my eye doctor the next time I see him.
