Question:
I started on Atkins induction diet 2 weeks ago. I lose about 1/2 lb every day or every other day. IS THAT AVERAGE? I though I would lose more. Also, a nutritionist warned me that it was a dangerous diet and could seriously damage kidneys. HELP! It certainly took away my hunger cravings. How can I put my fears to rest
Answer:
My observation is that those starting low-carb can seem to lose a lot at first, then the weight loss goes down to something more sensible. Atkins says in his book that low-carb diets are diuretic, so a certain percentage of your weight loss to start off will be water. This is also the reason that he says you should not be taking diuretic drugs if you are on a low-carb diet. His critics then try to point out that all the weight loss that his patients and readers get is just temporary water loss; it's just an illusion. Most of the posters to this group, including me, give lie to that position, but it keeps on getting made. Other unfounded attacks on low-carb diets include cholesterol and kidney damage. After the first water loss if you lose a pound a week you are doing pretty well. Congrats!
