Question:
I am so eager to lose weight,I have heard of the controversial Atkins Diet, especially in the cholesterol effect term. Does it actually work?
Answer:
I've been on the Atkins diet for about 4 months and have lost 40 lbs. quite effortlessly. I feel great (I did after the 3rd or 4th day), energetic...everything promised came true, except for one thing. My total cholesterol (I don't have it broken down) was 275 before I started the diet. One month later I was a bit disappointed to see it was still around 270 to 275. So, I began taking the nutrients Atkins suggests. Three months later my cholesterol was... 315!!! Here's a bit of history. Maybe the answer lies herein. I have a hard time getting into ketosis. It generally takes me 5-7 days of almost zero carbs to do so. When I'm in it, however, I lose weight like an SOB. It's almost scary (3 lbs/day is not unusual). So to get into a slower loss mode I add 30-40 g/day of carbs over a few days and on that regimen I lose 2-3 lbs. a week with no problem at all. Another bit of info: When I was on the only other diet I've ever been on, a self-designed low-fat diet, I lost about as much weight as I did on Atkins *AND* my cholesterol went from 265 to 210 in about 2 months. If anyone has any insights or suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Please e-mail me as well as posting because my news server is a dog. Anti-Atkins responders are welcome too, but please have something more to say than what do you expect? As far as I know I am the only person I've met on Atkins whose cholesterol has not gone DOWN substantially. Granted my universe is only about 10 or 15 people, but they all say the same thing.
