Tagged As: Atkins Diet Rule
Question:
After trying for ages to count calories I have decided to give up and try the Atkins Diet. I know you restrict carbohydrates and eat a lot of protein, but what about things like butter and cream or cheese. Can someone tell me the main rules so I can follow it properly. Thanks.
Answer:
The basic idea of Atkins is no-sugar, no-starch. Protein foods and fats are not limited. Carbohydrate grams are counted. Vegetables are limited for the first two weeks, but expanded slowly (along with fruit) after that. It is an eating style that you don't go off when you're at goal weight, you just slowly increase your carbohydrate to the maximum your body can handle without gaining. You really need to read the book to understand the diet. Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, by Robert C. Atkins, MD It is available for about 6 or 7 dollars in paperback in the US, and from http://www.amazon.com if you're not in the US. Another popular book with a very similar diet is Protein Power, by Michael R. Eades, MD and Mary Dan Eades, MD This book goes further in depth with explanations of why the lowcarb diet works. It also is available in paperback in the US, and from www.amazon.com For general information on low carbohydrate diets, visit The Lowcarb Retreat http://members.tripod.com/~Dietman2/index.html
