Grapefruit Juice on Atkins Diet is good or not?

Tagged As: Atkins Grapefruit Diet

Question:
My wife and I started on this diet Monday and it's pretty easy to follow, but what bothers us it that it states you need to drink grapefruit juice or eat a grapefruit twice a day for this to work. After reading the label, I realized the grapefruit juice and tomato juice have around 25 g, carbs per serving. Do we need to drink it or should we drop it?

Answer:
The grapefruit or grapefruit juice is from something called The Mayo Clinic Diet that's been making the rounds for some years. However it actually has no connection with the Mayo Clinic. And the grapefruit isn't needed as long as you take vitamin and mineral supplements. All the grapefruit does is add some necessary vitamins -- and lots of unnecessary and weight-loss-slowing carbohydrates. My suggestion is that you get either Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution or Protein Power by Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades -- or preferably both, since reading both of them can help you better understand the why's of low-carb eating. Both books are on the current best-seller lists so they're easily available at just about any bookstore or library. You've gotten a good start -- no, scratch that and make it a =great= start! :-) I suspect that without the grapefruit to hamper you, you're going to do really well on this way of eating. Good luck
