Question:
I would like to hear anyones experience with this type of high protein, low carb diet? Does anyone know the drawbacks to nursing mothers if they do this diet? Im not doing it personally, so no flames please. Michelle
Answer:
I did the Atkins diet two years ago before my wedding ... dropped weight easily (actually, not so much pounds but inches) and looked like a million bucks in my wedding dress! ;) I believe there is absolutely no harm in *anyone* cutting out refined sugar and white flour in their diets. However, an Atkins-type low-carb diet may be too extreme for breastfeeding women (certainly pregnant women) ... it promotes ketosis, which is probably not safe while bf'ing. However, there are other variations of the low-carb diet, such as Protein Power, CAD (Carbohydrate Addict's Diet), and The Zone. These may not be as extreme as Atkins. It's probably not unsafe for a bf-ing woman to limit her carb intake to whole grains and fruit, avoiding refined sugar, white or refined flour, and starchy veggies (e.g., potatoes, corn). For me personally, I find low-carb the best way to shed extra weight, and I don't mind a protein-and-veggie diet (I don't have a terribly strong sweet tooth). I'll do this again to drop weight when it's safe for me to diet. YMMV, though!
