Tagged As: what can i eat on the atkins diet
Question:
My friend started phase 1 last Sunday (the induction phase) and of of yesterday...one week later he has lost 5 pounds and a few inches off his body. He wants me to start the program but I am SO confused! I have been reading up on http://atkins.com and it seems SO LIMITED on what you can eat? Basically eggs and meat. It also seems that you have to buy all these products from Atkins like sugar substitutes, flour mixes, drinks, bars etc...I don't have all this kind of money to be buying all of that plus going to the grocery store. Last year my nutritionist put me on a program with the 'food group chart.' She says veggies and fruits are important, yet Atkins says NO, she says Crystal Lite is the best drink to drink when you are trying to lose weight, 5 calories per serving, 0 everything else, yet Atkins says NO. You have to measure all of this stuff, I don't have a kitchen scale, how in the hell do you measure ounces of this or ounces of that? I'm still confused on what I can eat and what I can't. I'm still confused on who to believe and who not to believe. I never did the plan that my nutritionist put me on because of my depression, I just kinda hung it up on my wall and forgot about it. I just wnat something that is going to work for me, something I can stick with. I have 100lbs that I need to lose, the weight is really doing a number on my self esteem and I feel bad about myself. I am just so confused on what to do and how to go about it. Can anyone help? If I try the Atkins thing, what can I eat and how much of it can I eat? I don't want to concentrate on what I CAN'T eat, but rather what I CAN eat. That way I have ONE list of exceptable foods and that is the list I use, ONLY.
Answer:
I would try to read a copy of the book if I were you to get more information. The allowed foods are in there. Basically, on induction, you keep your net carb grams (Carbs minus fiber, simplistically speaking) The allowed foods are eggs, meats (unprocessed--no balogna etc)and three cups of salad with a lo-carb (high fat) dressing. The induction period is meant to put your body in KETOSIS (change from burning carbs to burning fats) and to adjust your eating to the lo-carb way (usually there are withdrawel symptoms for a few days, where you don't feel so well) Then, you feel great! So, no sugar, bread, pasta, rice. and high carb veggies. Eat bacon, eggs, butter, cream, steak and hamburg, pork and chicken. There are lots of great food ideas here. (Do a search on REC) After the two weeks you can start adding a few more carbs and expanding your menu. The book explains all of that. Keep the faith, and do this for yourself. Get some blood work done to see where you are starting from, read the book and research. Pick a day and start. It took me about 6 weeks to get ready and I have not looked back for almost 6 months. I have lost 35+ lbs and have 100 to go, but it doesn't matter if it takes me two or more years, because I feel so much better about myself already. My Husband is doing it as well and has even more to lose, and he has issues but he is sticking to it. I am proud of him.
