Question:
My dad recently started this diet, and has been on it for about a week. So far he has lost about 13 pounds (although he has a lot more to go), and he is very excited about it. My question is, how safe is this? Is there anything he should be aware of? Any helpful comments?
Answer:
I won't comment on how safe this diet is. But, I do want to comment on our all-encompassing addiction to diets. Many of us seem to think that there is the perfect diet out there that will make us slim and healthy, then we can go back to eating the way we did before the diet and everything will be fine. It doesn't work like that. I have been on every diet known to man (except possibly the Cabbage Soup Diet) and I have lost hundreds of pounds, only to gain it all back and in many cases more. Then I decided that what I needed to do was to change my eating lifestyle. Almost three years ago my husband and I started living a low-fat lifestyle and exercising regularly (at least 4 days each week, 1/2 hour or more a day). We have both lost weight to where we feel we are at our ideal weight and we are both much healthier. We never think about ending our lifestyle like people think about ending their diet, it has become a way of life for us. Every once in a while we splurge and have a high fat treat, but usually we pay for it by feeling ill for a while since our bodies can no longer tolerate high fat foods. It is not a difficult lifestyle to adopt, it just takes a little organization and planning. Unfortunately, a low-fat lifestyle is very difficult to adopt for people who eat out more often than they cook for themselves, but even then, improvements can be made. Stop talking about diets and start thinking about changing your lifestyle. Diets are guaranteed to fail. I don't know any individual who has dieted and successfully kept the weight off for any length of time.
