Miracle Cabbage Soup Diet: is it dangerous?

Tagged As: miracle cabbage soup diet

Question:
I have heard nothing good about the cabbage soup diet. Is it dangerous ? In fact, the copies that are often passed around and considered healthy because of the references to the So-and-so Hospital, are -in fact- a full fledged urban legend. Jan Brunvand, widely respected author of many books on urban legends and a professor at the University in Salt Lake City, speaks of the Miracle Soup Diet, etc, in his books. You will lose weight on the diet, but you will most probably gain it all back. And you'll probably feel very weak and tired to boot. The cabbage soup is not nutritious and doesn't give your body what it needs. You'll lose weight simply because you're starving it, and when you go off the diet you'll have lost a lot of muscle along with the fat, and you'll gain all the weight (and none of it in muscle unless you start exercising) back. I don't recommend the cabbage soup diet.

Answer:
I have written my comments about this diet so many times, that my fingers have gotten much thinner just from the exercise!! This diet CAN and WAS very dangerous for me. I keep seeing it in many forums. I was skeptical at first, other than having some weight to lose, I was very healthy. All my chem screens were excellent. But I decided to try it, just to get the ball rolling on my weight loss. I figured I loved fruit and vegetables, and though I don't normally eat red meat, once wouldn't kill me! So I tried it. When I got to the all fruit days, I became very ill, I was having sweats .. I was pale .. dizzy .. and nearly passed out several times. I had the sensation of bladder infection which turned out to be my body spilling sugar in my urine to try to get rid of it. I was blacking out so many times, that they were about to put me in the hospital. As it turned out, the diet had caused a reactive hypoglycemic reaction in me. I have to believe it was the diet, because I had never experienced this condition before. It has taken months to correct my blood glucose to a stable condition. And the worst of it was ... I didn't even lose any WEIGHT ... talk about irony!! Now I am back to eating healthy and walking everyday ... the MIRACLE only happened AFTER I stopped looking for miracles!! This is just my experience .. but I think it is important to share. I have never heard of anyone that actually stuck RIGHT to this diet and actually lost and kept off weight. Make the soup (it is actually quite tasty) and eat it whenever you are hungry. But don't follow the rest of the diet plan ..
