Question:
Saw an Physiotherapist who also does acupuncture, which I had done today for the first time, very interesting. I think it worked! Anyhow, I was asking about the treatment, I told her I had CD, and she said acupuncture can be used as a treatment for Crohn's. That, obviously, caught my attention. She said she wasn't qualified to carry out the treatment for the disease, she specialized in muscle treatment. Anyone ever have acupuncture done for CD? Or other diseases?
Answer:
The main thing is if it worked for you. Did it? Sounds like it did…that is amazing, how wonderful. Let me know how long it lasts, I might be willing to try it if it works. I haven't posted here for awhile but this particular topic managed to capture my attention. I too had acupuncture at various times for CD. By and large if it did work, the effect was very short lived. I'll never forget for instance the very first time when I was seriously ill about fourteen years back. I felt rather stoned after leaving the treatment because it was sooooo relaxing. And yet about six hours later I was very sick(of course I was eating something which got me so sick on top of the flare up I was experiencing--beef and potato burritos made in lard are not exactly Crohn's friendly!). On subsequent occasions even when I behaved myself diet wise I nonetheless had chronic pain from one or more flare-ups. And the acupuncture story was pretty much the same-----possible initial relief invariably followed by a return of the discomfort. Personally I'm skeptical how acupuncture could really help CD(and the same criticism is directed at Chinese herbal teas). Perhaps it might slightly diminish the pain from inflammation but it certainly cannot reverse the subsequent post-inflammatory scarring. Just one person's $.02 contribution here. Traditional Chinese medicine (herbs + acupuncture + diet) is the medicine that had the best results on my Crohn so far. I first started with acupuncture 4 years ago. I was in constant pain and nothing worked to relieve it. Acupuncture worked great, but it only lasted 1 or 2 days, sometimes even less, which was great anyway because the constant pain was driving me mad. 3 years ago I found a traditional Chinese medicine doc and with herbs + acupuncture + diet I achieved my first remission (after 3 years of non stop flare). Unfortunately it only lasted 2 months. It still works better than occidental medicine for me. I've now been pain free for 2 years, have no more bad diarrhea, loose less blood and am less tired. One other thing acupuncture is good at is getting you rid of abscesses. One needle well placed and I loose all the pus of the abscess the day after. I hope this help. Feel free to ask if you want more info on acupuncture. From what I understand from my acupuncturist, in China they treat CD/UC by multiple weekly if not daily treatments for awhile & then space it out. I started going twice a week for a month then once a week and now 2 weeks then a month etc. It's really worked well for me (UC) so far but time will tell.
