Diet and Health FAQ

Can anyone share some of their gestational diabetes tips/nutritional advice?

Question:
I just got the phone call this morning that my three-hour glucose test came back abnormal and that I have gestational diabetes. I don't have the appointment set up yet with the dietician, but I am wondering what I need to avoid in the meantime until I get to see them. I've read on various sites general information, but nothing specific (i.e. avoid pasta, avoid sugar, etc.). I know a diet gets structured to your specific needs based on weight, current glucose levels, etc. I just want to be sure I'm staying away from things that won't be good for me. Can anyone share some of their gestational diabetes tips/nutritional advice?

Answer:

You simply want to avoid foods that will elevate your glucose levels. Google for glycemic index for a list of foods that will raise blood sugar levels. Basically, any simple carbs will do that. Avoid most simple carbs, eat complex carbs, and don't eat carbs without balancing them with protein. Fiber helps. Don't go too long between meals.
