Question:
I'm a new type II diagnosed in October, very well controlled (fasting BG 75-95) by diet, weight loss (5'10 Male down below 190 lbs..WOW!) and 5mg micronase a day. (Not getting enough exercies, though.) My kidneys are fine. The printed diet my doctor gave me limits me to under 100 grams of protein a day. I asked him why and he said something about protein turning directly into sugar. I always thought high protein was good for you. Does anyone have any ideas why protein is restricted?
Answer:
From what I remember from my readings when I was first diagnosed: The prescribed diabetic diet used to be high-protein, especially before the development of insulin, because protein is digested and converted to sugar relatively slowly. However it is also high in calories and has other negative health effects, so several years ago the recommended diabetic diet was changed to be similar to the normal recommended diet: high in complex carbohydrates.
