Question:
I had originally been diagnosed as having IBS by my GP (Internal Medicine). After trying Librax (and being spaced out for a month) he rediagnosed me as having an Acid-Reflux Disorder. I was given prescription-strength Tagemet, but it did not work. Now I am on Prilosec (20mg a day) and after 2 weeks it seems to be helping, although not yet completely (I still have some bloating, intense gas, hunger pain).
Answer:
A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine within the last couple of months showed that the combination of Prilosec and Propulsid, a drug that helps to empty the stomach, was far better than anything else for reflux, producing just short of a 90% cure rate. (Your doctor may even have read it!) You might want to ask your doc about adding Propulsid to your regimen. Reglan, which may or may not be cheaper, has much the same effect as Propulsid. Just a note from personal experience -- Propulsid is well deserving of its name -- it propels the food out of your stomach and thru your intestinal tract with record speed -- not real good if you have IBS. Since the doctors prescribe it 4 x a day (before meals and at bedtime), anyone taking this with an active bout of IBS diarrhea may want to reconsider On the other hand it may be the exact solution for someone who's IBS case results in cyclic bouts of irregularity, constipation or other problems resulting in decreased motility. Remember that IBS is a term used when a positive diagnosis is indeterminate. Propulsid has contributed a great deal to improving my IBS condition. Try pepcid. you can get it over the counter. When I used it was prescription. I had a very severe problem with reflux associated with my Crohns. Pepcid was a great help. I would start feeling better right away.
