Question:
I know that calories are lost when glucose spills over into the urine, but is this the only way weight loss occurs in diabetes? Over the past few years I have lost quite a bit of weight and am trying to figure out if its diabetes related. Since discovering high blood glucose I have only changed my diet ever so slightly as I ate very healthy to avoid symptoms of hypoglycemia before I knew I was having blood glucose spikes. I have not cut out any calories and have not started any type of exercise regimen. In fact my physical activity has been less due to fatigue. My doctors have explored all other possiblities. I've monitored my urine for glucose and ketones, they never them show up. If I understand correctly glucose only spills out into the urine when the blood glucose gets above 200 right? I rarely see my blood sugar rise over 120 and consume enough carbs to stay out of ketosis. Are there any other ways to know if my weight loss diet is diabetes related?
Answer:
What type of diabetes do you have? If you have type 2, lowering your BG can help to cause weight loss. Certain diabetes meds can help to cause weight loss. So can decreased calories and increased exercise. Thyroid problems can cause weight loss.
