Does anyone know of the west point fitness and diet book?

Question:
I've been lurking for a couple of weeks now, I hope nobody minds me just jumping in. I have recently taken up ITF TKD and am hooked, the problem is that although I am relatively fit I am carrying quite a bit of excess weight around (Particularly in the gut area) which I would very much like to get rid of. My question is two-fold: 1. Can anyone recommend any good exercises particularly geared towards fat burning. 2. Does anyone know of West Point Fitness and Diet resources (Web, books, etc) nutrition seems to be a subject not very well covered in relation to martial arts, by teachers, students or anyone really.

Answer:
The American Dietary Association (they probably have a web site someplace) has food group recommendations, menu plans, caloric intake recommendations, etc. Generally you will need the equivalent protein to 8-12 oz. of meat, and a selection of foods from each of the major food groups. The West Point Diet (the military has plenty of well funded studies on physical fitness) recommends a 1200 minimum calorie diet for weight loss and 2800-3400 calorie diet for someone who is already physically fit and is strenuously active. 1200 calories is about 8 oz meat, 1/2 cup milk, four slices toast, 1/2 cup starchy vegetable or rice, 3 tsp fat or oil, 1 small fruit and all the green vegetables and diet drinks that you can eat. Because you lose electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chlorine) through sweat, any of the sport drinks like Gatorade can replenish those supplies to avoid a heat stroke caused by deficiency. But, there is no benefit to taking in excess amounts.
