Question:
I was diagnosed with ibs about 5 years ago. I had a flair up about 2 months ago. I am now having a bladder problem with frequent urinating. I think it may be spasms. Has anyone else had this problem??
Answer:
I do not know what medication you have been prescribed to control your IBS symptoms, but one of the drawbacks of the various anti-spasmodic prescription meds is that they do not just target the GI tract, but they can affect the central nervous system, the urinary tract and eyes as well. The newly approved medication Lotronex (alosetron HCl) is indicated for female IBS patients who have diarrhea as their predominant symptom. It specifically targets receptors in the GI tract and therefore would not be expected to affect other parts of the body. It is taken twice daily and within a week or so, should be expected to control or improve loose stools, abdominal pain and urgency. Many GI specialists think that this medication will represent a significant advance in the therapy of IBS.
