Question:
Can anyone tell me are there any benefits of following a low-carb diet? Are there better chances of avoiding heart disease?
Answer:
Joe, you'll probably get answers from people on different sides of the fence to this question. Some support low-fat, others, low-carb etc. Certainly main stream dietiticans don't tend to support low-carbs. This doesn't mean you can't, but it does suggest the weight of standard scientific evidence doesn't support that position. Certainly in my experience, weight loss occurs primarily through creating a calorie deficit (where your body uses more calories than you feed it). What makes up those calories, whether they're carbs or not, probably isn't really important.
