Tagged As: Diet For A Healthy Kidney
Question:
Hi all; This is my first time on this NG, we have a toy Poodle and a Peke-A_Poo both age 8 and both recently diagnosed with reduced kidney function. They were put on a diet of Hill's Prescription Diet K/D exclusively by our vet. My question is two-fold: first since they were big table food eaters and doggie treats lovers they are missing them. Does anyone know of a low protein, low phosphorus dog treats, either commercial or home made recipe that they could have? And probably more important, a home cooked diet that would be more tempting and tasty to them and still meet their dietary needs then just the Hill's? Thanks in advance for any help,
Answer:
Sounds like It will be tough convincing these 2 that they need to eat something good for them! You'll need to trick them. have you tried any fruit? introduce it in small amounts at first. Banana, grapes, veggies, sweet potatoes(steamed, peeled, smashed),melon, etc. Just introduce them gradually. Hills is the best for kidney diets. have you tried rice cakes? When dogs get hungry they will try almost anything. Remember,by not giving them table food, you are helping them to a healthier life At the pet store you may be able to find treats without salt. look for the natural treats, and read the labels. Good luck!
