The key to successful weight loss IMO can be broken down into a few simple ideas. Using these simple principals I have lost over 180 pounds since July 25, 1997. 1.You need to find the type of diet that works for you. Diets can be broken down into two basic groups, those that are low cal, and those that are low carb, with dozens of diets in each group and in the middle. A low cal diet usually follows the 5 basic food groups, grains & starches, proteins, fruits and veggies, dairy and fat. You eat a balanced diet, usually limiting your fat intake and keep your total cal intake at a level that still maintains your health, but also results in weight loss. The low carb idea is for people whom have a problem with carbs (starches). Some are addicted to them, i.e. they can not stop eating things like bread and pasta. Others are hypoglycemic and need to lower carbs in order to be healthy. Some just prefer the foods, (protein, fat and non-starchy veggies) and don't really mind not eating the carbs. Both plans work, for different reasons and on different people. 2.Now you need to find the diet that suits you. You need to take into account, what foods you like, what things you are willing to do, and what type of diet fits into your lifestyle. If you don't really like meat and prefer pasta, then low carb might be a problem, but if your favorite foods are meat and fat and when you eat pasta you can't stop, then low carb might be the good thing. With a low cal diet, you need to weigh and measure food quantities, with a low carb diet you need to test your urine daily for signs of ketosis and have blood work done a few times a year to make sure your lipid profile improves. There is a wealth of info there. 3.You need to grasp the idea that your diet must be a life style change, not just a temporary stage. If you want to maintain the weight you worked so hard to lose you need to change your food choices, cooking and shopping habits for life. going back to your old ways of eating after you have lost the weight will make that weight return quickly. For a lot of dieters, this is a concept they never really learned. I have lost close to 1000 pounds in my life, only to see it return because I was changing my habits only temporarily, not for the rest of my life. 4.Exercise is crucial. Move your body. Do more then thumb exercises on the TV remote:). Start out gradually with walking and slowly increase it to the point where you begin to need some guidance on what to do to take it to the next level. Some join a gym, others do work out tapes. But do SOMETHING! 5.Become an active, alt.support. diet and the alt,support.diet.low-fat or alt.support.diet.low-carb participant You may think you have nothing that would be worth while because you are just starting out, but you do have important things to share. Remembering what it was like starting out is very beneficial for me and I m sure others because it keeps me focused and helps make me stronger. Others just starting out can benefit from your experiences. Ask questions, no matter how foolish you might think they are. Keep an open mind. Many in ASD have lost a lot of weight and kept it off successfully. Each has a distinct story. Take what helps you, and leave the rest. 6.be gentle with yourself. You didn't gain that weight in a week, and you won't lose it in a week. Stop beating yourself up and start looking for the good with in you. 7.beware of snake oil claims. There are many people out there who will try to take your money with promises of quick, easy weight loss. There is no such thing. The quicker it comes off, the quicker it returns. And in the end, you have only lost weight in your wallet. You do not need to spend money on weight loss aids, supplements, and diet plans to lose weight. If you do chose to take supplements, you can get them cheaply at most health and/or nutrition stores, then purchasing them from an mlm distributor. before you part ways with your funds, ask questions about the product here. many have tried the products and can give you a true first hand account of it's success or failure and how to purchase it the cheapest way possible.
