Question:
I just cannot do it. I do not want to take this med. I posted on the schizophrenia ng asking if there was anyone who did not experience weight gain or sexual dysfunction on Risperdal, and I got nothing. Only positives. Even on as low a dose as 2 mg. Now I am starting on .25 which is really small, actually I am taking half of that pill for two days first and then starting the whole ones, so it shouldn't have too much of an effect so it wouldn't hurt me if I just took it today. But why take it at all if I do not plan to continue? The pdoc said all I needed to do was watch what I eat and get excercise and I would be fine, but I did this as well as take diet pills and puke occasionally when I was on seroquel yet I gained 12 pounds in 3 months, and seroquel is supposed to be much better for not causing weight gain, yet I did. Risperdal is known for causing weight gain so I don't see how I can escape it. What I really want to do is take a few of the leftover Klonopin that I have and sleep all day. I can't stand it!
Answer:
I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but a lot of clinical studies have been done to see how much weight gain really is a factor in certain medications. For instance a study was done on a medication which has the possibility of weight gain as one of the side effects. All of the women who participated in this study were told about possible weight gain while on this medication. They had half of them take the real medication, while the other half took a placebo(looks like the medication, but contains no drug at all). None of the women knew that they could possibly be taking a placebo. All of the women thought they were taking the real medication. It was a double blind study, so not even the nurses giving the medication knew whether it was the real thing or not. Anyhow the results of this particular study was that the same percentage of women gained weight in each group, regardless if they took a placebo or the real medication. This has been the result in many clinical studies, this one is just an example. I'm not trying to disregard your feelings or fears, but I don't think you should obsess over it. The best way to deal with this is to keep concentrating on losing the 7 pounds. Think of your daily pill as JUST a pill. If you want to, think of it like it's a vitamin - DON'T see it as the Instant Weight Gainer 2000: guaranteed to pack on the pounds. LOL I hope that at least made you smile. : ) Anyway, keep concentrating on losing those 7 pounds and you WILL do it! Don't take diet pills, don't throw up your food. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. Do moderate excercise 2-3 times a week(if you can exercise in the sunshine it will help your mood too). Drink at least 6 glasses of water per day. Personally, I think weight loss has a lot to do with HOW MUCH you eat. So, watch your portion sizes mostly. I hope this helped you. E-mail me if you need any encouragement. I know from experience about this: I have lost 20 lbs and kept it off, although I am also on medication that is supposed to make me gain weight too! Take care of yourself, and relax. Take a nice hot bath and soak, or read a feel good book. Take Care,
