Question:
I've been a vegan and a lacto-ovo vegetarian (swinging off and on between the two, depending on personal circumstances) in the past and have recently been experimenting with fruitarianism over the last three months or so. The problem here, however, is that I started this during the period immediately before I became pregnant and have been eating a vegan diet with about 40% fruit. Does anyone know what ill-effects of a 60% or more fruit diet would be if I continued on my fruitarianism? My doctor, unfortnuately, doesn't even understand the concept of veganism, let alone raw-foods and fruitarianism. So far, on this diet, I've done well, except I haven't gained that much weight. Does anyone have more definitive information?
Answer:
If you're concerned about this, then why don't you buy a good book on human nutrition, a good book on nutrition and diet and pregnancy, and read. I am not a doctor, and am not a nutritionist, and what I say must be taken as the comment of an interested, but not qualified, observer. But I think you'll find that whether your diet is adequate or not depends more on the final count of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water in your diet, and not on exactly what it is that you're eating.
