Question:
I am curious to know about free Zone diet recipes. Does this simply become a new way to eat after a period of time? How long has anyone been on it? After a while can you simply try to eat sensibly and not have to count carbs, protein and fat all of the time?
Answer:
When you first start it seems overwhelming with all the counting to balance out the meals. If you're like most people, you'll find that you only eat 6 or less different breakfasts regularly, 4 or less different lunches, and 20 or so different dinners. Once you've worked out a balanced recipe you can eat it again anytime without recalculating. If you want to try a new recipe, you spend 10 minutes or so reading the labels and calculating it out, then make it. My standard breakfast for the summer is 3 block version: 3/4 cup lowfat cottage cheese 1 1/2 cups fruit salad 2 tsp toasted chopped almonds 4 block version: 1 cup low fat cottage cheese 2 cups fruit salad 3 tsp toasted chopped almonds I go to the store, buy a bunch of melons (watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, casaba, Santa Claus) and berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) and make 3 or 4 days worth of fruit salad. I buy a bag of chopped almonds and toast it in the toaster oven. Total preparation time is 30 minutes or so and I've made breakfast for 1/2 the week. I told a friend about the diet, and he started in January. He's had very good results and his rules are: every meal Have some low fat protein Have some low GI carbs. You learn pretty quick which fruits and veggies work and which don't. Add some olives, nuts, olive oil or guacamole. He doesn't weigh or measure anything, he just figures it out by eye.
