How did you get your body whipped back into shape when some of you old timers stopped?

Question:
My father's passing has really shaken me up. He was too young to go, but it really was the result of not taking proper care of himself for so long. That was the road I was on for a long time too. I still woke up with terrible feelings. It has been a couple months since I honestly and totally stopped drinking, so I don't think that has a whole lot to do with it. My doctor checked out my blood and said it looked ok. Anyways, I still get really fatigued in the afternoons, and sort of moody. So I don't really know if it's an honest problem with depression, if it's something wrong with me, or most likely if it's just eating not so healthy foods (and not enough of them even). So, when some of you old timers stopped, how did you get your body whipped back into shape? Obviously, for me at least, not drinking is the first and most important priority. But I need to do something to get whipped back into reasonable health. I have been trying to get some excersise, walking and things, but I get really tired, and lost a lot of motivation for things lately. And I think my body just lacks the fuel that it needs to really physically recover. I don't know, it just seems that after so many weeks of not drinking, that things might have really taken off. I don't get sick in the mornings anymore, which is a very nice thing (that was really the catalyst for me quitting--finally life became insane and intolerable). But there haven't been the extreme health benifits that I thought there might be. Don't get me wrong, I feel terrifically better now than just a couple months ago. Just REALLY worn down and irritable. Maybe it's a combination of a lot of stress, poor diet..... Just venting, I have been awake since about 2am (and insomnia doesn't help either), and feel REALLY grouchy today! Later guys, any thoughts on the matter are appreciated. I have an appointment with the good Doctor next week, so I'll run things past him too. I just think if I could get past this insomnia (that has plauged me for my entire life--even as a baby when it plauged my mom's life!) my whole view of things would get better. I'd have more energy, be more likely to eat better. My doctor knows all about my abuse problems, and so I think he's a little edgy about giving me something for the sleep. After researching some of it, I don't really blame him! I really don't need to take up prescription drugs in place of booze. I don't know, trying to take care of it. And like I said, A1 is staying off the beers. I feel like crap, but at least the ulcers and stomach problems are going away! (that was really scaring me---I was afraid to even look after I got sick or went to the bathroom, for fear of what I might find). Maybe I am just being paranoid. I mean, I lived like Jim Morrison for the last 7 or 8 years, and only recently got myself sober. How should I feel? Lots of damage was caused for a long time. I'm not asking for sympathy here, I just know that a lot of you guys understand how hard the road back can be, and could use the boost.

Answer:

After abusing alcohol for X years you expect to feel well after Y days or weeks? Getting the alcohol out of the system is only the start of the process, no matter what process that is. I found it better to focus on where I had come from, rather than where I think I should be... neither is keeping things in the day, but at least I can reflect that life is better than it was and I'm achieving something if it's only keeping off the sauce. Also, alcoholism has very little to do with drinking. Booze was the solution to the problem of alcoholism, it wasn't the cause. If booze was really the problem, all anyone would need do is quit drinking. If your diet is poor, that's probably something to focus on along with the actions necessary for recovery. Remember HALTT - Hungry Angry Lonely Tired Thirsty... conditions to avoid. I found it amazing how my mood would improve with a decent meal, even when I didn't feel hungry before eating.
