Question:
I'm a teenager who has recently decided that it would probably be a good idea to start eating healthy foods. I came across a random fact on the internet stating that apples can be used in the morning to help one become fully awake more quickly, and that they are more effective at this than coffee. This caught my attention, so I started to research apples and found many claims of their great nutritional value. My first question is this: what type of apple should be the beginning of my new, healthy life? I know this is a terribly broad question, but I'll say that I would prefer for it to have a satisfactory taste (something sweet would be nice) and that it should probably be a brand that can be found in the normal grocery stores. My second question is this: what else besides apples should I try? Are there any other good fruits that also have positive nutritional side effects? Well, I know that there are, but which ones specifically? If this is completely the wrong area to post this message, I am very sorry and I will happily pack up and move off to another place that is more appropriate. Does anyone know of any useful resources for people like me (a teen who has never been on a diet and is a little short on the willpower)? Or Should apple be included in a Healthy Diet For Teenager? Thanks for any help you can provide.
Answer:
I think your idea of eating a healthier diet is great! However, I think you need to learn more about a healthy diet. The best diet I can recommend is one that lets you maintain a healthy weight, that is rich in fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fat. If you acheive a diet like this, you will have a diet that is healthier than the vast majority of Americans. Getting enough excercise and not doing stupid things, like stop smoking, don't drive without a seatbelt, don't ride bikes without helmets, no sex without protection (i.e., cap the carrot, no glove, no love) is very imporrtant too. Here are some links to nutrition sites: http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/nutrition.htm This is from Columbia Univ. in NYC. http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/Cat3.html And click Nutrition under Healthy Lifestyle here: http://www.intelihealth.com/ So remember a healthy diet, excercise, avoid stupid stuff.
