Question:
I have subscribed to this group for about 6 months but have not posted in a while I was wondering if anyone here had a sample of a low carbo diet. I have a friend who is looking for a sample diet and I figured this would be a good place to find a sample diet.
Answer:
I purchased several books to help inform me, but mainly I take time to grocery shop, and read every label of every food I consider purchasing. I subtract the fiber grams per serving from the total carbohydrate grams and try to keep all purchases as low as possible. I like for them to be 10 net grams or less; I consider 15 grams or less; and occasionally allow myself 20 net grams or less ... but that is getting up there for me. I don't follow any author's advice to a T, but instead soak up a bit of wisdom from each researcher. My favorite books are Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution by Richard K. Bernstein, M.D., and Protein Power by the Drs. Eades. I also learned from Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. Other popular softcover books are SugarBusters by three New Orleans area surgeons; Entering the Zone and Mastering the Zone by Dr. Barry Sears; NeanderThin by Ray Audette; and Carbohydrate Addicts' Diet by the Hellers. There are a few newer books out also, and Dr. Bernstein has produced some recipe collections. Dr. Atkins is the strictest about carbohydrates; SugarBusters and The Zone are the most lenient. Some books differ in the details, but the main gist is the same: Diabetes is mainly a problem dealing with carbohydrates, so we minimize them, add plenty of fiber, never drink what we can eat (more fiber that way), space our meals out, exercise plenty, drink plenty of water or similar, and try to keep a cool head, to keep our condition as optimal as possible.
