Question:
After reading the post about pain on the left side, I figured maybe it was time to ask a question also. Does IBS cause a pain about an inch or two to the left side of the belly button? This seems to come on when slightly constipated and the pain get worse and can last up to 20 hours or so, often there is gas also. Cannot figure out what to take for this type of pain. Tylenol does not help. Could having a colonoscopy cause IBS symptoms afterwards?
Answer:
My IBS pain is in various places at various times, so I can't answer your first question. As for IBS symptoms after a colonoscopy, I had one almost 2 weeks ago. Before that, I had been having problems with constipation from my pain meds, etc. The majority of my symptoms tend to the diarrhea side when I'm not taking anything that would affect it otherwise. Especially the first few days afterwards, I had some of the IBS pain again and had to run to the bathroom. So, even though I was still taking the usual meds, I started having the IBS pains and symptoms. The doc got a really good photo of a very severe spasm during the exam. In fact, I think he said it was one of the worst he had seen. Obviously if our bowel is very susceptible to being irritated by something, a colonoscopy would do it. Heck, the stuff I had to drink the night before was bad enough on its own!!! Now the doc has me on unprocessed wheat bran (3T/day) and 2 Surfak (instead of Colace). Hopefully that will help as long as I have to take the meds. This could be totally unrelated to you problem but thought I'd pass it on anyway. I have that same pain to the left of my navel when constipated as well. My doc checked me out and found a small abdominal hernia that acts up from the straining associated with bowel movements or with heavy lifting. Nothing that I need to take care of unless I want to and I haven't....but that's my 2 cents for what it's worth.
