Question:
I'm going to be travelling for a few weeks in Germany. I'm unsure as to how difficult it will be for me to keep to a relatively low-carb diet tip while I'm there; does anyone have any suggestions? I've already arranged for a seafood meal on the plane, which appears to be one of the lower-carb choices, with a bag of nuts along to snack on. Thanks.
Answer:
I bring bags of chicken and tuna. I also bring macadamia nuts, sunflower kernels, and beef jerky. Keep everything pre-packaged as I don't know the rules for bringing in food. Breakfast will be easy since most hotels serve a good selection of meats and cheeses to go along with the breads. And the coffee is fabulous - a time when I would say to hell with the decaf! Get salads. The menus will list what is in the salad, and you can pick out what you can't eat - think of it that way......can't eat rather than shouldn't eat. You'll get a lot of veal in Germany. Other meats such as pork will be plentiful, beef less so depending on where you are. Go for simple fish dishes. No matter what, you'll simply have to push aside most side dishes. The other thing I do is craft my own meals from grocery stores. If I am going to be somewhere for more than a day, I find the nearest grocery and load up on meat, cheese, and legal veggies. I try to have only one full meal out per day....the rest I piece together. You may go over your carb limits, but if you're 5 or 10 over and keep the portions and calories reasonable, you should be fine. Who knows, the carb up may get you moving. Protein and fat ratios are pretty much out the window since it is almost impossible to tell how much you are eating and what's in the sauce, and if you are a manic record keeper like me, you will simply have to deal with it for the duration of the trip. If it's any consolation, I went on a cruise in July and stayed level for a week. I just got home from a 9 day trip to Minneapolis last week where I was eating out at least once a day. I lost 3 pounds. Good luck and enjoy Germany. I haven't been there for a couple of years
