Question:
I'b been virtually vegan (except for ocassional skim milk in coffee and two egg white omlets and an ocassional piece of tuna sushi) for about five weeks now. My fat intake has been on average about 10-15 percent a day. But, guess what I have lost no weight. My suspicion is that I am unusually carbo-senstive and even the complex carbs alopng with the simple carbs are turning into fat at an unusual degree. I also eat a lot of fat free refriend beans with low-fat tortillas. A lot. I don't count calories. In the past I was very sucessful dropping weight on a low-carbo diet -- but I won't do it again because my cholesterol hit the roof and the weight I lost came back very very quickly. So, thoughts advice. Is the only solution to spend 90 minutes a day running or some similar torture? Trying to get from 193 to 168 (5'11, small frame here). Thoughts?
Answer:
Try a more reasonable diet of 25 to 35% fat. Increase protein. If that doesn't work try low carb. The health benefits of very low fat: less than 20% of calories usually don't outweigh the side effects. These include gastrointestinal distress, acid refux, bone loss, fatigue, depression, and mal absorbtion of fat soluble vitamins which lead to deficiencies. I developed these problems plus cataracts in both eyes from following the Ornish diet for manner years. Also nearly lost my job and many friends because I became belligerent. A co-worker suggested I get on Zoloft. I think he actually was afraid I would go postal and pull a gun out of my briefcase. It just isn't worth it unless you have been diagnosed heart disease. I have had two cataract surgeries at a very young age. The rest of my problems subsided after giving up extreme low fat. I doubt your doctor put you on such an extreme program, and if advised you were doing it for weight loss only, you would be advised not to go to such extreme.
